Investors today seek more than just investment advice from their financial advisors. In fact, 68% of investors want to discuss financial planning issues with their advisors. Interestingly, that is the same percentage of investors that indicate their advisors have provided comprehensive financial planning as a service to them. As far as other types of planning advice investors may be seeking: 37% would like assistance with Long Term Health Care options and 56% would like additional Tax Planning advice. In comparison, 35% have received some assistance with Long Term Health Care from their advisor. The larger gap was receiving additional tax planning advice. Only 46% have received any additional advice on tax issues from their advisors.

How can advisors continue to assist investors with these planning based issues?

· While most financial advisors are not tax experts, they do need to be knowledgeable about key issues related to investments. Alert clients when specific transactions or investments may result in tax issues. Make sure you are aware of new legislation that may impact their investment decisions and clearly articulate these rules to investors.

· There are numerous financial planning software solutions available today. To the extent any of these solutions provide client portals, be sure to allow clients access to this information.

· Sit down with investors to discuss their plans should there be a catastrophic health event. Most investors are very concerned about this issue yet not sure how to approach a solution. By providing a sounding board for investors you will ensure their long term loyalty and trust.

· Continue to provide investors with updates on regulatory changes and other issues that they should be aware of in relation to their financial planning. Even if they choose to ignore acting upon issues, they will remember that you are thinking about them.

It is anticipated that the holistic planning based need will continue to be an expectation of investors. Now more than ever, investors want to identify a framework to help them secure their future. Opportunities are available for advisors willing to take a thoughtful ongoing approach to meeting these needs.
